Brigham Young felt concerned for the Saints still in California and in some instances believed that gold should be collected—but only if it served a purpose other than personal enrichment. Some leading men were authorized to call a few men to take the southern route to California; their calls were to find gold and bring it back. Those sponsoring these “gold mining missionaries: would receive a share of whatever gold was brought home As many as twenty gold mining missionaries left late in 1849 for southern California.
