(C) An Indian cut the buttons from her dress
The following in reference to the life of Agnes H. McEwan: She told of one experience which frightened her very much. She and another young girl had run ahead of the company and sat down on the side of the road to rest and wait for the others to catch up. Suddenly an Indian came riding over the hill and straight towards them. He dismounted, took out a long knife and came directly to Agnes, who was terrified. He quickly cut off all the bright-colored buttons down the front of her dress and walked calmly back to his horse. He took some dried buffalo meat hanging from his saddle and brought it to Agnes and presented it to her, then mounted his horse and rode away without harming either of the girls. When the girls ran back to the company, they vowed never to go ahead of them again. As the company had been without meat for several days, the meat given to Agnes by the Indian proved to be very welcome to the Saints.
