The following from the life of Adam Craik Smyth, born February 29, 1840: On one occasion Smyth was called to judge a music contest held in Price, Utah. The contest number was “Pilgrim’s Chorus” from I Lombardi. After the contest was finished, Smyth refused to make an award for first place, saying that every choir had “murdered” the piece by singing it much too fast, and he added that it was in the nature of a prayer and should have been sung with much more feeling.
