The following from the autobiography of singer Nellie Druce Pugsley. Her family immigrated to Salt Lake City in 1860. It was here that she was born: About 1890, an Eisteddfod, a musical contest patterned after the Welsh Eisteddfod, which was originated by the Welsh minstrels, was held in the Tabernacle. Nationally known musical judges were brought to Utah for this occasion and knew the contestants only by number. Eliminations were held earlier in the day, and I was one of the five selected for the vocal section. The judges, in giving their decision, stated that I had the brains, the heart, and the beautiful voice to go with them. My student, Claribel Riges, won second place.
