It was Sung Before it was Taught

We are all familiar with the hymn “O my Father,” which is often sung at LDS funerals. Written in 1845, this hymn by Eliza R. Snow, alludes to a Heavenly Mother. Sister Snow penned the lyrics to this hymn after Joseph Smith taught her about our heavenly parentage.  When did the first presidency first publicly teach of a Heavenly Mother?
