When the Church was disenfranchised by the federal government for the practice of plural marriage, it was the state of California that came to the rescue. Not only did they harbor Church exiles, but it was their politicians who lobbied the government for acceptance and tolerance. It was because of these efforts directed at the United States Congress that the Church was reestablished, reintroduced in California, and Utah obtained statehood.
