The following is taken from the life of William Van Dawson Burnett.
William started off the trek with hard leather boots which he got wet on the first day out. The next day the boots were so stiff that he could not get them on and so he threw the boots away. He came barefooted the entire journey leaving bloody tracks in the snow.
