(C) Buffalo herds
At Wood River, near the one hundredth meridian, the Willie company suffered a misfortune that meant they wouldn’t have a chance to get through without assistance. The valley was filled with buffalo, and one night they stampeded through the Willie camp. When the sleepers crawled out from under their carts and wagons, they found that no one had been injured, but thirty head of cattle were missing, having been dispersed among the wild herd. They were almost horseless and had no luck finding their herd. They had to start on without their insurance beef and with too few draft animals to pull their heavy supply wagons.
