The School of Zion Monument in Troost Park, located in nearby Kansas City, is a seven foot high monument to the first school in Kansas City. The building which became the first school in Kansas City was built by the church as a chapel. The foundation was laid by Joseph Smith August 2, 1831 in what was then Kaw Township twelve miles west of Independence. Affixed to the marble marker is a bronze plaque depicting the Prophet Joseph and eleven companions carrying the foundation-log.
