(A)                 The Civil War
The Mormons were not in fact abolitionists, but gradualists. Joseph Smith in 1844 advanced the progressive idea that the national government should purchase the slaves from their owners with money from the sale of public lands. Great Britain had so purchased the freedom of her slaves in 1833. The American investment in slave property was about two billion dollars. The Civil War cost North and South about eight billion, not counting veteran’s pensions, and seven hundred thousand lives, not to mention the miseries of Reconstruction.
