Joseph and Emma Smith were living with the family [John Johnson] in Hiram when a mob of apostates and anti-Mormons dragged the Prophet from his bed. They tarred and feathered both Joseph and Sydney Rigdon. John Johnson rushed to the field to save the prophet, but the mob turned on him after he knocked down one man with a club. As he rushed back to his house, Brother John Poorman mistook him for a mobster and broke his collar bone. He was healed following an administration by David Whitman.
