A short time after that I drove the oxen to take Mother and the children down near the river to gather cattails for filling bedticks and pillow cases. There is not much said about cattails these days, but many a pioneer would have suffered dreadfully from cold during those terrible winters if it had not been for those comforting, comfortable cattails, which made such warm, soft beds.
