Cardston, Alberta: Prairie fires often threatened the lives and property of the saints. One such fire started when a fire used to heat branding irons leaped a river in three different places and within three hours had left a twenty-five mile long path of ashes. All the community was on hand to drag cow hides or gunny sacks across the flame and to plow a fireguard. Once when a fire was noticed within the fireguard, four plucky girls removed their petticoats, soaked them in the stream and hurriedly “whipped the fire with sodden garments,” keeping it under control until help arrived.
