Given the high degree of political tensions and emotions involved, the Utah War ended as amicably as possible. John Jaques, who later served as an assistant Church historian, summed up the frustration and waste associated with the Utah War when he penned the following lines in his poem “The Mormon Question”:
Buchanan had avoided
Much guilt and keen remorse,
If he’d not sent to Utah
The cart before the horse.
