(B) The
General Tithing office
The
first real postal system in the Utah territory involved the General Church
Tithing Office in Salt Lake City and other local tithing offices. These
community “stores” serve variously as warehouses, banks, employment agencies,
welfare and weighing stations-and as centers for communications. They were the
“post offices” of the territory, using tithing-donated labor to receive and
dispatch mail. They were also the centers of commerce, accounting, and exchange
until banks and general stores appeared in the 1870’s.
