As 1896 saw the emergence of the forty-fifth state, it was also the beginning of a new year for the Church. “In 1894 its escheated personal property was returned, and in 1896 the real estate came back, but it was less than what had been confiscated and did not greatly aid in settling the debts. In addition to the damage done by escheatment in the first place, the church was hurt by the drop in tithing income when members felt it would only be confiscated by the government receiver and therefore saw no purpose in donation their income to that source.” The Church nevertheless began its steady progress towards retiring this huge debt in the ensuing ten years. By 1903 half of the debt was redeemed and the remaining debt was extinguished by 1907.
