B Independence Rock
Independence Rock is 167’ high on the south end, 193’ high on the north end, and covers 24 acres. It is the most noted landmark along the portion of the trail west of Fort Laramie. It was a place to look for word of friends ahead or leave word for those coming on behind, and beyond those practical uses, it satisfied the human need to be known. Because it was a place where many who passed by carved or painted their names, it became known as the “Register of the Desert.” Although many of the Mormon Pioneers undoubtedly placed their names on the rock, the names of only two saints have been identified as remaining on the rock today” Peregrine Sessions and J. W. Crosby.
