The Jewish Benevolent Society was organized in 1864 which signaled the beginning of formal celebration of Jewish Holy Days. That same year a Jewish cemetery was deeded to the Jewish community by Brigham Young. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were observed in 1867 in the Seventies Hall at the invitation of Brigham Young. In 1873 the first formal Jewish congregation was established with the name Congregation B’nai Israel. The Passover observance of 1876 was reported in The Salt Lake Tribune which noted that at the congregation in Salt Lake numbered forty families.
